Yes. I’ve seen this happened many times. Firms do this as a pretext for a dismissal. They cite your low billables as a reason for a dismissal even though you have been asking for work. It’s hard to survive at a law firm with low billables.
Definitely understand that; firms are running a business. I’m just hoping this is only a momentary slowdown but am trying to brace myself for the worst. I billed 270 hours between January and February and have probably close to 80 non-billable hours that count toward my bonus, but March in particular has been so slow that it’s making me nervous.
Don’t freak out. Just start looking at what’s out there or what you might want to do next so you’re not thrown off completely if it does happen.
Not to freak you out, but that happened to me. I was even given a trial, and when the case was continued, I was fired out of the blue. They hired a first year lawyer to replace me. Literally 1 month past the bar exam.

Weird time of year and weird year.
Remember, interest rates are the highest they've been in a decade and all that pent up deal demand was spent in 21-22. Firms are doing layoffs for a reason right now: there isn't enough work to go around.
I can see associate hours here (AmLaw 50) and they were weak in Feb. May be slightly better in March.
Also we kinda narrowly avoided an economic catastrophe just this weekend.
Keep reaching out. Don't be afraid to hit up the debt/bankruptcy/funds people, they should have work right now.

They're at the center of some long-term trends related to the movement of money (being where that money moved). In sum: they have and are going to continue to have a lot of work for the foreseeable future.
Who are your go to partners? Can you ask them what's up?
I really only have one go-to partner and he himself has said he'll definitely keep me in mind if something new comes in, but I like your idea of bringing up my concern specifically. I've only ever told him I'm slow and could use some work, not "is there a larger problem I should be concerned about?" I've gotten good reviews so just a bit confused about this.
