Missing the big green dollar sign.
From all I’ve heard from within the firm, first year partners generally make at least $1M with senior MDPs making >$5M. I think these may have been higher over the past couple years though.
Not that rare
Much harder to sell (with the exception of people whose brand is bigger than their firm, and they are rare), much more variable profit margins year to year, significantly lower diversification / higher risk, and likely much harder time attracting good talent. A lot of additional headaches for a highly uncertain upside.
Where are you Partner at?
I perceive it would be a much larger headache to sell large projects with appropriate staffing numbers and skill sets from boutique. My brain is more attuned to big 4 scale projects
I don’t think it’s rare at all. Quite common beneath partner level at least. Past that it becomes hard to give up your partner pension if you’re at a Big 4
Definition of boutiques?
Singular industry focus with <500 ppl
That’s a very specific criteria, I don’t think some well-known “boutiques” (I assumed slalom was consideeed a boutique at one point) would even qualify
The upsides you listed sound like reasons for folks to exit to industry itself.
