For paid internships, hunting time was actually Q4 of last year. Businesses hire interns then and budget for their salaries for 2025. I hired our 2 interns in December.
Fall semester, take your classes at night to free up your days and seek an internship then when there is less competition. Internships and apprenticeships are available all year long. You have to put in the effort to find them.
I had 6 internships by the time I graduated. Three were during the school semesters.
Get ready to hear no. A lot.
Pro
lol. You’re not lying one bit. The amount of time I’ve been told no for nearly anything.
Pro
A few points of advice I offer.
1. Take advantage of professional development. Both free and paid.
2. Save money. Marketing doesn’t always pay the most, so be prepared to fight for your salary.
3. Network. Build your network with professional organizations and keep close ties on friends from college. Can always pay off.
I have to disagree about unpaid internships. I believe everyone should be paid for work. I pay my interns $15/hr.
Just gaining experience doesn’t always make you more likely to get hired. I had 6 internships. My lowest paying one was minimum wage. I graduated with a portfolio of produced campaigns. My last agency internship wanted to hire me, but they had to reconsider when they lost a client and had layoffs (the nature of this business). It took almost a year after graduation before I landed somewhere.
