I would try to at least have a little bit of fun. I don't think it's a good idea to get plastered though. Regardless of your skin color
It’s not safe to ‘drink’ at any work function even happy hour get togethers. Always be professional. Don’t be the one people talk about, full stop.
I was dancing on a couch with HR one year 🤷🏾♀️…….I match the energy of the party
Often this is a path to promotions if your work is good.
I drink freely at work events 🍺 I just know my limits, won’t let it get past tipsy stage, and won’t do anything crazy. I might drink less if industry or the specific company doesn’t like drinking in general.
If anything, I think gender issue happens more often than race when it comes to drinking. One time, the owner’s wife (who is head of admin & accounting) told me I had too many drinks “for a lady” at a company party and that’s not good. Mind you, I was sober all the way thru, paid my own extra drinks, did the dance performance, MC’ed the event, and cleaned up after event when everyone is gone (not my job but i was being nice). The guys drank A LOT and she said it’s ok for guys to drink. Lol
Yes, I drink but I mix in pop and water. I have fun but I’m not willing to put my career or colleagues careers on the line because I can’t control myself.
Mr. Leo Burnett himself was born in Michigan, and founded his namesake agency in Chicago. His name was dropped in Mad Men a couple times.
Consulting has a big drinking culture (especially in my company), but after the pandemic, I think it's toned down quite a bit at my organization. But getting wild is a privilege reserved for them, IMO.
I go to work parties when possible (I didn't go this year since I was sick/burned out), but I limit myself to two alcoholic drinks max and switch out with water or soda. I also make sure to eat before I drink and make my exit after an hour or so.
I used to love going out and getting wasted, but I hate the way it makes my body feel now.
I drink soda and enjoy the sad/weird/hilarious show of some colleagues getting hammered and showing their true colors of every kind — good and bad. I spent a good chunk of this year’s holiday party thinking about how much some folks are going to regret things they said/did. I don’t need that stress in my life.
