I’ve been a paralegal for eight years. I’ve handled everything from case management to trial prep and I still get called the assistant in court. I’m not precious about titles, but I worked hard for mine. It feels dismissive, even if it’s unintentional. Has anyone found a good way to gently correct people without sounding defensive or petty?

I also had the same issue, I just stopped correcting people. Know in your heart that you are and your spirit will still flow!!

I totally understand your frustration. It can be tough when the hard work and dedication you put into your role isn’t fully recognized. One approach I’ve found helpful is to gently clarify by saying something like, “Actually, I’m a paralegal—I've handled everything from case management to trial prep.” It’s a way to affirm your expertise without sounding defensive, and it helps educate others on the important work you do. People don’t always realize the depth of a paralegal’s role, so a quick, friendly correction can go a long way in helping them see it. Keep up the great work!

Not really. I don’t take it personally, whether they mean it as a negative or not. My job is assisting, and I’m fine with that.

I have no problem correcting people. I went to school longer than some of these attorneys so best believe I am going to say something. You aren't an assistant, no harm in correcting someone.

Assistant in this context is just a broad general term for anyone who assists, and since they may not know your specific title, many just use the term “assistant” as a catch all word.

Just collect your check. Who cares?

I need to do a timeline with lots of information over a long period of time. I wanted to that in Tableau, but partner will not pay license and data is sensitive so I cannot use Tableau public.
Do you have suggestions?
The requirements are the following:
- No online input data upload (so local editing)
- The produced output file must be local and easily exportable and readable
-timeline must be interactive (filter/click/zoom in/out/view detals etc.)
- free

Any kind of help is really appreciated

Currently a paralegal at a small start up financial services company been there for just a little over a year. I wear “multiple hats” but more recently I’ve done a lot of PM work and some BA work. My position title is changing soon but I’m wondering how helpful that would be for wanting to go into PM work at a tech company. Anyone have any career pivot advice? (Also I’m only 1.5yrs old in my career so I’m definitely still new, and I have previous experience as a project assistant).

I am prior military and went to law school. I had a family to take care of while I was a student, hence I went as fast as possible to get to a paycheck, graduating in 2 years, and bypassing the standard summer clerkships. How could I get some experience strictly remote? I am w-2 working as an accountant in healthcare, have passed the bar and am working on my CPA license (studying starts at 3 am, then work FT). I would like to eventually hang a shingle as a tax lawyer, but need experience. TIA!

Hi everyone. Is it typical for the attorney to take credit for the work a paralegal does? An example: I gave some ideas about deposition questions and some observations I made (I was asked about giving suggestions) regarding a witness and the attorney mentioned that he’s the one that had these great questions/observations. Zero credit or thank you for the work I did.

Where do you find the time to get everything done in the day when you have multiple partners, associates and equity partners that interrupt you and want things turned around immediately while simultaneously working on deadlines? I feel like I’m the only one that can’t manage a 70+ case load without letting someone down. I constantly have to say “Can I do this tomorrow?” Etc. I don’t even have time to bill on the clock. I work until 7p at least every night. Top 10 family law firm.

Paralegals: My firm is looking for a paralegal, and I see the job posting advertising the salary as $65-$75k, with benefits. Is this a good salary for a paralegal (Greater LA area)? I’m not the decision maker, but it’s been a few weeks with very few applicants. I’m curious if there’s something hurting the firm in its search.

I currently work at an international law firm (4 years) and recently accepted an offer to go in house. The main attorney I support did not take the news well and was very angry with me. I feel awful and beaten down as I don’t want to upset anyone but the new role is fully remote and a nice pay bump. Looking for words of encouragement that I did the right thing. I feel awful 😞

So I’ve been with a court for a while and honestly the pay sucks compared to what paralegals should be making… the benefits are great though and they match my retirement 100% now that I’m vested at 3 years.I have 4 kids and 1 is getting ready for college. I feel like the benefits are great but I’d rather make more now. I am a previous LEO for 4 years who switched to paralegal so I have my leo retirement. Paralegals here make $28 with no benefits what is a good compromise
