I’ve been experiencing severe burnout, depression and anxiety while working in Big Law. I’m about to transition to an in-house role, but I worry that I’m permanently broken that even a better environment won’t help. I guess I’m really just wondering if there’s still hope for me to feel well again.

Bro in house is so much better. If not, try and find a job that is...they do exist.

Been there. I took a significant pay cut, but I can’t begin to tell you how much better my life is since I went in house 6 months ago.

I look back and can’t believe how stressed out I was this time a year ago

like

Sounds like me. How many years were you in the biglaw grind for?

Man that's a F. Rip to those 5 years my guy but onto bigger and better tings

Man I feel this so hard. I’m moving in house after 6.5 years in a big law environment and feel like I legitimately have work trauma. I feel dull and useless. However the thought of starting fresh and being in a new environment does give me a bit of hope. Highly recommend taking even a week between jobs and maybe do a retreat or something to reset if you can, not just laying around rotting.

like

Although in house is very different and people often feel less useful (not sure why personally), at a minimum it gives you more balance and ability to do more outside of work. I think you’ve clearly worked very hard and need some time for yourself to heal and recover. You’ll get better and be happier. I daresay happier than you’ve ever been! Worst case scenario, the in house job is not great, you’ll have more time to spend with loved ones and a hobby even, and less at work!

Thoughts on seniority? Also, any interview resources for PE portfolio roles?

I have been at my company for 3.5 years. One year ago (2.5 years into my employment with them) they re-leveled everyone and I was bumped to an entry level position on the terms that they changed my job title when they re-leveled, so “technically” I am at the early stages of my new title. Even though the job duties did not really change.
I’m not sure the best way to approach this. Has anyone else had a similar experience or know how I should advocate for myself?

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Had two rounds of interviews for an in house role and really like the company/job. I followed up Friday regarding next steps and was told they are still interviewing and should be wrapping up soon. Advice on how to stay calm? I want the position and need to know if there’s a way to speed up the process.

Very specific to retail and/or hospitality in-house roles: has anyone found a good solution for predictive scheduling? Our retail division has one set of software for scheduling and one for payroll, and neither of them can handle predictive scheduling compliance issues unless they’re used for both the scheduling and payroll functions. I’m coming up empty on ideas for them to bridge the gap, but I’m also new to my compliance counsel role, so I would be overjoyed if anyone has suggestions.

Trials are rare, and I just don’t think these guys have actually tried many cases. Cont. below…

Anyone going to the security/privacy conference in DC this week?

Got a temp offer for less than a year without promise of turning into full-time. Wanted to know what ppl think about temp jobs (looks bad on resume if I don't turn full-time later within the company?) and what comp should look like (e.g. 1.2× of regular comp?).

Got another perm offer in a different industry for similar salary, but I might have to relocate and I'm concerned the work may involve translation instead of pure legal work.
