Hi Breanna! Your post really spoke to me. I, too, was in the criminal justice world! I have my masters in criminal justice and worked with inmates for a few years before switching over to tech. Working with inmates is my passion but it just wasn’t paying the bills. However, I’m a Recruiting Coordinator, not in PM so I’m not sure what it takes to be that. I can give general advice though!
What really helped me was networking. Network! Network! Network! It’s sounds super cliche and I’m sure you’ve heard it, but it truly isn’t what you know it’s who you know. When I was first transitioning, I direct messaged every single random Recruiting Coordinator I could find from the companies I wanted to work for. I set up informational interviews with the people who answered. I asked all about the role, the pros and cons, what their career trajectory looked liked.. anything and everything to truly get a feel for the role and if it was something I wanted to pursue. Not only did I gain connections, but I gained info and advice about tech/the RC role. I recommend doing that. That, and just randomly connect with everyone in the role/company/recruiters from that company. A lot of roles are posted via posts rather than the job board. Expanding your connections will help you see jobs you otherwise wouldn’t have before.
I also recommend joining Facebook groups and attending virtual conferences. You look like a Black woman, as am I. There are specific fb groups specifically for Black women entering into the tech space. Find them and network there as well! Engage with posts and post there! You’ll find so many people willing to help and provide resources for you.
Attending conferences is my personal favorite way to network. I attended the Black is Tech (free!!) virtual conference last year and I’ll be attending virtually this year as well. It’s in person this year as well if you want to go! It’s in September. Look it up on LinkedIn!! Sign up!! That’s the PERFECT way to connect with recruiters representing companies. That conference is how I connected with someone who connected me with someone else for the Meta role I’m in now!
I hear certificate programs are great. I’m not sure if PM has those? But I’d look into those as well. Lastly, going through a recruiting agency to help you out isn’t a bad idea either!!
Sorry for the long winded post! I hope this helps! You got this :)
I appreciate this a lot! Thank you very much! I would like to attend but virtually would be most helpful. I would not mind attending in person. I definitely love this advice and I will work on my networking skills lol and long winded is fine it was very insightful. I did register on LinkedIn! Although I’m not from the ATL,GA area.
I think I’ve googled so many agencies are there any particular ones for tech? - that are for diverse candidates…And with PM I’ve had some leadership experiences and I’m ready to show my talent, ambition and drive to fully carry out projects and task.
