I had an offer rescinded when I tried to negotiate. The thing is, they aren't wrong. Employers know the reality of the job market for job seekers, and that we have no leverage. It is a take it or leave it market for most of us.
It's very much an employer's market these days, and I wouldn't be surprised if they used that as a cudgel in negotiations. They can make low offers and simply refuse to negotiate, or bring up your own apparently desperate situation. They're confident that if you turn down the offer the next candidate in line will accept it. It's just how markets work.
