I’m in the same boat my friend. Still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up.
I’ve gone through this before and can relate. What was helpful for me was listing my interests and passions outside of work. And then trying to find areas in my company that had elements of those things. Then I transferred laterally in the same job family but to the org that aligned closer to my interests. And eventually learned enough about that particular business to transfer to the type of role I actually wanted to do. Hope this helps.
20 years and at the same spot. Era of boredom…
I am in the same boar for the last 11 years. Started as developer transitioned into BA and now to product management. Boredom continues.
Occasional daru is the only way out.
Booze party
You're at a perfect fork in the road to read Disrupt Yourself by Whitney Johnson. It's an easy and entertaining read that walks you through the why and how of reinventing yourself. I have also used the mental model of a venn diagram that overlaps: What do I enjoy doing? What can I get paid a reasonable wage for? What am I good at (or can feasibly learn)? If you find a trifecta, go for it!
Will try that. 🙏
I’m in the same boat, 5 years in, I’m doing cloud security… this is the industry everyone wants to be in, but some how I’m not passionate about it
If it makes you feel better, I graduated college I’m 2004 and I’m still questioning where I ended up. Money is decent, people and company are great…it’s just not what I pictured myself doing at this point in my life.
What do you do now?
Were you happy during those years? Were you satisfied and contented? If not, then probably you might want to take a step back and assess everything. We all go through that stage.
They were in waves. Haven’t had this prolonged ‘low’ time ever.
Focus on improving your quality of life for yourself, family, and loved ones. Putting your kids if you have any in the best position possible when they grow up, and making your community better. All that other stuff will come and go with time. Spending years focusing on the wrong things is a waste of the little precious time we have here. I view my work as a way to create freedom for myself and my loved ones.
