This is the same as telling an Auditor that them not being able to do Federal or State level Tax Compliance is a big problem. Accounting is a broad field and each area can have different duties that don’t cross over into other areas
My view is that even if a CPA didn’t know how to reconcile a bank account, they would be able to learn quickly how to do it. Just as if an Auditor didn’t know how to complete basic tax returns for companies/clients that they would be able to learn it quickly given their background. No previous exposure doesn’t mean not capable of doing a task
CPA’s hold plenty of jobs and many don’t involve reconciling cash
They demonstrated they are capable of it in FAR. Doesn’t mean that years down the line they can do it off the rip with no resources.

How exactly is the most prestigious designation in the business world considered worthless??
If they’ve never done it, I wouldn’t be surprised that they don’t know. However, I do expect them to be able to figure out how to do it after spending a reasonable amount of time looking into it.
I’m a CPA that’s never reconciled a bank account. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever learned how to either.

Kind of just feeding the monster here; this is one of multiple posts denigrating the CPA designation. Either they can’t/don’t care to earn it, just want to rile up those that have it/respect it, or both.
I’ve met multiple urologist with a phd behind their names that can’t do brain surgery. Several divorce attorneys that can’t handle a murder case. If you don’t need to do it, who cares?
Can you prepare Ohio state return?

Some bank recs are a piece of cake while others can be monsters. Many years ago when I started a new job at a credit union, I inherited a bank rec that had never been done properly. It was completed as little more than "our balance/their balance/difference". After creating a proper procedure and going back as far as I could with available documents, the account still required a sizable write-off to balance. My new boss, the Controller, was soon fired for letting this happen.
I have recently discovered that there are people who have certifications and titles that don't know how to do beginner level accounting/lack basic accounting skills. Then I realized that not every state has the same requirements. Not every company cares until they do.
An Accountant who doesn't know basic accounting is conflicting, is it not? I'm starting to see more job postings requiring a Bachelor's in Accounting along with CPA designation.
