Why would you leave a job for less money in this market? You should be able to find something
You grinded in public, dont accept anything below a 20% raise from your base. Also ask what the market is giving for that position as people mentioned.
Give them the range you want
I always say “I will leave the salary considerations up to whoever is extending the offer, I don’t comment on salaries before an offer is made"
What was the exact question? Was the question what is your current compensation or what is your desired compensation? If it is desired compensation you can always assert that you evaluate the compensation package as a whole, health benefits, 401K benefits, PTO not just wages.
By asking what the range is for this position
Honestly have been pretty miserable in current job so I definitely don't want to price myself out of the job so id be willing to go maybe 5k lower than what I currently make but I can't find salary info specific for this position/company online and the salaries just for the job title vary drastically
You can ask for a range but they will more than likely turn it back on you and ask what your looking for, so just start with what you want or think you should be getting and if it’s too high they’ll bump you down. Don’t say a range you wouldn’t be comfortable with getting
"What are your salary requirements"
In my experience, they don't let you get away with general statements like you would like to be paid the market rate, you are flexible, you would evaluate the entire package, you are more interested in the growth opportunity etc. They always insist on a number or range. Interviewers give you all kinds of blabla themselves but won't accept any blabla from you.
I would do some research before the call to find the range for similar roles in your city and then say sometime like “based on similar positions in the market I am a looking to be in the range of x to y but recognize that comp has many variables so depending on the other comp items the range might need to be adjusted.” Basically tell them I expect to be in range with the market but recognize salary is just one component that needs to be considered
Politely deflect - don’t ever give a first number. Just say you’re looking to learn about the opportunity and culture, and will have a better understanding of financial considerations later in the process. Then later, say you’re interested in seeing how the company values the position and don’t want to state a number to guide things a certain way
