I’ve seen multiple finance jobs lately that list Excel and SQL and Python and Tableau as required for an analyst role paying $72K. I know versatility matters, but at this point it feels like companies are just combining three jobs into one and hoping someone desperate enough will bite. I have two of the four tools down, but it’s getting hard to tell whether I’m not qualified or just being undercut. Where’s the line between being well-rounded and being exploited?

I believe knowing Excel, some form of scripting language, and how databases work is critical for a new hire. At a bare minimum, if you want to work in any aspect of finance:
1) you’ll should know and be great in Excel
2) you should know some scripting language to improve efficiency and productivity.
3) knowing a basics of a database is also critical for anyone who uses data - you don’t need to know how to be a systems architect, but knowing basic queries will take you ~ a weekend to learn.
4) tableau seems like one job posting that frustrated you… I wouldn’t dedicate time to this.

I work for a very large company. No one uses python (although I can see why it would be useful). It's crazy that it's an expectation.

Maybe a startup could require that...

I do not think it is a big ask to have some kind of experience in any of those. It is if you are expected to be an expert and then apply that to a wide variety of responsibilities.

Just found out that end of the year I will be promoted from analyst directly to VP and since it’s such a large jump I’ll be the lowest paid VP in asset management at only $135k TC. Should I stay it out and wait for TC to align or take the promotion and jump ship bc I will likely get paid more elsewhere given how recruiters/other companies eat up hiring recently promoted ppl from other firms?

Is IB worth the sacrifice of WLB? Obvious pay is really good but are the prestige and pay worth it if you’re planning on only doing it for a couple years?

Currently working at an IRA with great WLB. Honestly I love my job, the firm, and people I work with.

Also doing MBA part time at a T15 school. Thinking about switching to IB but I’ve done my research and I think I would burn out of IB in two years but I might be ok with that for the opportunities after.

Getting paid 85k base with 40k in bonus plus about 35k~ in OT.

Money isn’t everything but in my late 20s it feels like the only thing important right now.

WLB is next to zero as 60hr weeks are the minimum as of late. Management feels like they are trying to push a few of us out. Was told not to expect much come year end for comp. Any suggestions on finding a new role/pay expectations?

Is there such things as FP&A positions in Big 4? If so, are there better times to make the change than others (I.e. at senior vs manager)? I’m currently in FP&A and looking to work at a Big 4, or another company that offers the ability to move abroad. My current company and many others I know about do not offer the mobility to do so until much later, which is not what I want. Thank you.
