I’ve spent the last five years becoming a niche specialist in partnership tax, and now I feel like I’ve accidentally pigeonholed myself into a corne. I want to pivot into a broader FP&A role, but every recruiter tells me I’m too technical for a strategic position. It’s frustrating because I know how to analyze the numbers. What’s the best way to pivot out of a heavy tax background into a general finance role? Is a massive paycut just a given?

Start leaving all the technical niche skills off your resume. Highlight instead how you can analyze the numbers and broader experience. A pay cut is contingent on what you are leaving and what you want to get into.

I’m in the same boat. Been trying to get into FP&A roles as I have experience there in a smaller scale. But I’m so in deep with accounting/auditing that some orgs don’t see that skill set as transferable. As Staff Accountant said, I would def tailor your resume. I even rewrite my resume a little depending on the job I’m applying for. It’s got me some interviews at least.
