I recently interviewed for L7 EM at Google and had 4 great interviews and one not so great system design. I submitted external referrals all of which gave great feedback. The recruiter said the next step is team match/interviews and then the HC. Anyone in a similar situation? What was the result? Google

A lot of times doing extra work really comes down to getting extra visibility. Someone once told me that if I put in extra work but no one who mattered noticed, I might as well have not done it. That's a pretty cynical outlook, but, hey, it's not wrong.

For me the signal is visibility and ownership. If the extra responsibility comes with decision making power, exposure to leadership, or new skills, it is development. If it is just volume with the same authority, it is probably just more work.

I've made the mistake of taking on new tasks, it was good to prove how hard I work and my competency but now I'm always landed with the new work and never get the compensation.
