I went from consulting to portco exec and worked with LMM and MF sponsor teams both deal and ops. Expect a steep learning curve and the hours to increase. Expect the intensity to increase too. The bar is high but you got in and funds hire sparingly, so you don’t need to worry about high attrition rates like consulting.
Finally, you should prepare to be more on your own to figure things out and learn stuff. There aren’t “resources” to learn/coach/mentor like in Consulting.
All of that said, congratulations on the next chapter of your career! You will learn a lot.
unstructured flow of consciousness as I sit on tarmac: i did the same change but to be a portco operator. the biggest thing i had to get really good at was managing relationships. I’m naturally extroverted and have always been a people person, so this came easy. I came in with fellow MBB folks that really struggled at first because they couldnt get people to listen to them even when they were polished and had the numbers to tell the story. Their stakeholders thought they were getting spoken down to. Getting people to like and trust you and exuding the confidence to your stakeholders you can do the job is such a huge part of being in this environment. Especially if you’re at industrials or something with frontline workers. Even tho this seems like an investing role, you will still need to work with management teams and other investors near you where those skills are really helpful. I’m sure you have impeccable attention to detail and good analysis skills, so you will be fine for the academic part of the job.
Learning with a steep curve has always been your strength, so trust that. As you look to continue growing your career and being a people leader in general, just being liked is far more important. Just being a guy that is smart doesnt get you far.
