Junior looking to lateral into a government contracts group. What’s the best approach to make the transition without direct experience? I have two years of litigation and transactional experience under my belt, but most junior listings require direct experience. Am I stuck pursuing a federal claims clerkship to make the transition down the road, or does anyone know if making the switch while emphasizing the transferable skills is possible?

Try looking into government roles. DoD hires lots of civilian acquisition lawyers. Also check out Commercial Lit Branch at DOJ, where you will get experience litigating government contract claims and bid protests at COFC, which can set you up for a transition into an Amlaw govcon practice. DOJ might get you to your goal faster than a clerkship.

You ever talk to one of the partners from that group?

Good. Just be candid and interested. Many folks are happy with have eager associates help out.

Are you currently at an AmLaw firm, and were you able to get both lit and trans experience through a rotation system?

Definitely cast a wide net, but you may need to start at another regional firm to get traction, or in a role that is government-contracts adjacent like municipal law or commercial construction. I'd also start the process of pursuing a federal claims clerkship - it's probably easier to get into government-focused clerkships than ever given how unpopular this administration is.

The top partners do not treat associates or staff well and I had a brutal “last straw” situation last week. I’m burnt out (pacing at 2200) and anxious all the time, I hit a wall mentally/physically/emotionally. Is it worth it to look elsewhere or is this just big firm life? 🥴
