Before sending this, is it a request out of the blue, or something that was asked of you before today and you put it on the back burner? If it’s out of the blue, say this:
“Hi Partner,
I am actually away and won’t have time to assemble a slide deck this weekend. However, I should be able to get you something by noon on Monday, would that work?"
However, if this was something you procrastinated on, you gotta hit the deadline
Have to agree with G1
Always set your OOO to start auto-replying a minimum of 30 minutes before you actually plan to leave the office. Anyone who sends a last-minute Friday afternoon email requesting that you work over the weekend and provide a deliverable before Monday is a Lumberg and does not deserve a response until it is, in fact. Monday. Alternatively, send a response from your phone that says something like “I’m sorry, but I’m out of town this weekend and I don’t have my laptop with me. Will Monday be OK?” (Option 2 is if you’re too scared of getting fired for using Option 1, which is an acceptable perspective for a newbie).
You shouldn’t need to set an OOO for the weekend though...
Live your life. It’s just work
Say no
I'm new on this project and asked the director in the morning if I can support him with anything. I feel like I should just bring my laptop and do it. Don't wanna get off on the wrong foot in my first week on this proj 🤔😔
Yup, what SC1 said. OP don't come back later saying we didn't warn you. 🙃
@OP this could go a lot of diff ways & it sucks you got the request... just wanted to chime in and say that if you don’t set limits/boundaries then you won’t have any...
I’d do it to give a first impression that I’m a team player and don’t just check out when it hits 5pm. It sucks but the partner will have 100 more experiences where he/she worked while on vacation or over a weekend and it was inconvenient; they may not have a lot of sympathy for you. If I’ve set the precedent that i will help when I can and go the extra mile by working a weekend or vacation, then I’ll turn down future requests when I really can’t do it.
Being new, I’d do everything in my power to best position myself as a go to for leadership. There will always be someone who is willing to work a weekend or vacation, and that persons career will grow faster and higher than the people who turn down partner requests during off hours
Doing this task will not automatically position OP for leadership. This can be quickly forgotten.
OP's mistake is not understanding the value of the ask; is it project critical or a vanity project.
You're right OP should do it because they can't judge the importance of the request. However not all work is valued equally
I would not do it. Enjoy your weekend.
Being new, I’d do it. Lesson learned, let people know you’ll be gone ( OOO) ahead of time so they can direct their requests to someone else
I would do it, but also set my OOO so the Partner sees it when he replies to your email.
Pretend you did not check the mail unless the partner calls ..which he won’t coz he doesn’t care
