Just had to ask for permission to attend a funeral. On the weekend. No deadlines in sight. What a gig.

Why did you ask permission? “I am attending a funeral on X/X. I will be out of pocket from x until x. Please let me know if you need me to arrange coverage. Thank you”

like

Did someone tell you that you need "permission" or to let them know in advance so that they can arrange coverage? If "permission" - LOL. Lateral.

like

That’s crazy. I never tell anyone what I’m doing on the weekends.

like

This is not normal. Please seriously considering lateraling.

Live freely. Stop being subservient to a system that will never care about you. Look out for yourself. Even people who’d pretend to care would care for themselves first -- whether out of choice or compulsion.

like

Listen. Lateral. Like yesterday.

To those of you suggesting lateraling: I’d love to. The issue is that I recently lateraled to this position (less than a year ago). I feel as though leaving could indeed brand me a flight risk at future firms.

likefunny

Please stop this way of thinking. If youre looking to leave with just 1 year or less, everyone knows it was not a good fit. They just need to figure out whether the issue is you or the prior firm. You can definitely let them know that it is not you without being explicit about it.

like

Should not ask for permission - should just inform superiors after you're already traveling. Or if not even out of office, just go and don't tell anyone what you are doing on the weekends. Work does not need insight into everything going on in your life.

Clawback clause in current contract: been in role for over 2 yrs, it was an internal move that required relocation. Relocation was approved shortly after (over 2 yrs ago) but covid meant the actual move and start of my contract with new subsidiary was delayed, I was paid by the previous subsidiary meanwhile. I got small relocation package. Would internal move be subject to a buy-out/clawback clause if I leave now and if yes, is it time in role or time under new contract? Any experience? Thanks!

Let’s talk speed reading. I’m a slow reader and listened to a podcast recently on speed reading. I’m intrigued. Who here speed reads? How did you learn those skills, and what types of documents do you speed read in practice? I do mostly litigation and am thinking that speed reading would help with research but maybe not things like doc review where you need to review for both responsiveness and privilege.

I have an interview coming up with Church & Dwight. When the recruiter emailed me with 3 interview times I thought he was asking me what time works best. Turns out he was telling me I was scheduled for 3 different interviews for 3 different teams in one day. Has anyone heard of a company doing that or gone through this for an interview? It seems odd to me

What’s your work-life balance like? I feel like I’m constantly working after hours, always balancing multiple projects, hardly ever going through a phase where there isn’t a ton of critical initiatives going on. It definitely wasn’t like this when I was a more junior PMM, but as a Senior PMM, my work-life balance has severely decreased. Is this just the nature of Product Marketing? Or can I actually find a senior PMM role that allows a bit more room to breathe?

Foreign LLM student here. I plan to take the NY bar exam in February. I’m thinking of taking a bar prep course (most likely Barbri). They offer two options: the “traditional” course (which lasts around 2.5 months) and an extended 6-month course. The difference in price is substantial – 2.5k for the traditional course vs 6k for the extended one. Any thoughts/recommendations on which one I should take? In case it is helpful, I come from a civil law country. Thanks!

Does anyone know if this is normal? I joined a vault 100 firm in September last year. The firm put me on tier 7. In January I had the associate review and everything was normal. After a couple of weeks, I got the call from the hiring partner telling my bonus and new salary (because of the firm-wide salary increase). I realized I still get paid as a 7 year associate. The partner said because I joined the firm later in the year, it’s normal not to advance in the next year. Is it? Thanks!
