Everything is subjective so if you had a good reason for doing it like you did then don’t feel bad about it. You’ll get it righter next time.
The point of an IR in my view isn't to get 10s across the board--welcome the feedback. If the team is focusing on the wrong things, stop and reorient them to what matters or VO the broad strokes. It certainly helps if you do a creative review before the IR for "pre-approval" of content. Also, sometimes I do a "lanuscript" and kind of pre-lay things out so people can better visualize content in context.
Give yourself some grace. We all have those bad IRs. But also - remember how that felt, so that when someone shows YOU work, you show up better for them and don’t make them feel that way. How you make somebody feel says a lot about you. Be the kind of copy sup and creative that makes people feel inspired not deflated. We need more people to inspire.

I do this all the time. Then when I'm done with how I want it, I make a version that strips out all the copy and just says what each thing is.
No one wants to read the copy until it is in layout. They also don't need to know that you've written the whole thing while they review the layout.
I see this with clients: some people just have a hard time envisioning things before layout.
I find when I need to add explanatory text to rationalize something, using a table (1 column for content, 1 column for explanations/commentary) or comments can be useful, since it moves all that copy out of the content body.
Be grateful for the candid and direct feedback and do better next time. We are all works in progress. If you had known better you would have done better before, so don’t be too hard on yourself.
I would just say something like. Thanks everyone for your feedback, it got me to thinking that what would really help is a paired down outline. I’d put that paired down outline as your first page and then keep the “full outline” as secondary
Not a biggie, in my opinion. I'd rather see too much in an IR and collaborate on where it can be trimmed down, or maybe discuss if it should become a larger piece. Sorry your team got too focused on the volume and didn't pay attention to the content.
