Just started a new role in industry 2 months ago and my manager sent me a long email today saying he is not happy with my performance and is not at par with my level. He also pointed out list of instances when my submissions were late. Some of the things I agree but not all. Should I reply back or talk about it on our one on one and what to respond. They might be building a case to let me go.

Sounds like they’re building documentation, in case your performance doesn’t improve. The next step after written documentation is usually a performance improvement plan.

I would definitely not respond in email - come up with counter arguments and your side of the story to discuss in your 1:1. Try to be unemotional and present facts. I would also figure out exactly what your manager is expecting in terms of ‘performance at your level’ so you have clear markers to hit.

like

I would also add that you should sell how receptive you are to feedback, and possibly start firing up your resume. Doesn’t hurt!

Monday Morning rumination: unsolicited advise is criticism.

Much to reflect on with this topic. Last week I was told in a 1:1 with a new contact that I was “too direct”. After some time chewing on the conversation I was struggling to place the emotions I was feeling. Turns out I was feeling guilty and shame for being me, for taking up space. Lesson of the week: unsolicited advice is a criticism of you, a micro aggression of who you are, and being “too much”. What would you do??
