Bali recommendations on things to do?
Hi there. Ex Deloitte Sr Mgr here, currently in tech pre sales (SaaS / MarTech). Recently spoke to both Salesforce and Adobe recruiters for roles that I thought were lateral moves (Sr SA / Sr SC), therefore I did not proceed with the selection process. The recruiters from both companies told me they typically hire at that level, and people are considered for promotion to Principal in 1 to 2 years. I found that odd. Is that right? What’s the typical TC for SAs and SCs there? (15+ yrs exp).

Hotel gym at 6am before work or at 1am after work
Correct
Lmao, the responses are exactly why consulting is considered so toxic.
My advise- if you don’t want partnership, plan to get the hell out
Full agreement. Bail the moment it’s been >1.5 years (to look good on resume) and you know you won’t be partner. Partnership is the only way to realize the upside of consulting.
order salads and go walking meetings where possible
Sleep less, work out early, avoid alcohol
Food: Portion control while eating outside meals - I realised a few months in the job that I had started over ordering as all the food could be expensed. That was the wrong mindset. So portion control and watching where I ordered in from helped.
Workout: When not travelling, I got myself a personal trainer at the gym - it helped to bring discipline and forced me to go as otherwise the money would go to waste. Team is also forgiving to let you for an hour in the evening if you mention you have a personal training session. Then I would work late after workout/dinner.
Sleep: Got myself a fitness tracking ring. It made me aware of how bad I am sleeping and a constant reminder to prioritise sleep. Even if that meant covering significant sleep debt over the weekend due to work commitments in the week.
I believe that health should be prioritised and it can be if you enforce boundaries. It will help with both longevity in the career (and progression). Burnout work mindset only lead to sub optimal outcomes in the longer run.
Hope this helps! Happy Consulting :)
Sad reality of consulting:/
You can’t stay healthy and move at least at mck
Find a routine and stick to it, there’s no silver bullet, everyone’s different. Set expectations with project and practice leadership - we’re constantly balancing client demands, firm demands, and personal commitments. Consistent exercise, sleep, clean diet - find good hobbies and recreation for the weekends. Having a few good friends is better than having many acquaintances. Avoid complainers and people who blame everything else but themselves. Good luck
In my experience it comes down to being semi-disciplined:
- Try to eat healthy for most meals during the week and don’t overeat (super easy to do when expensing every meal). Don’t fall into pressure to drink during the week (or do so sparingly). It hurts your sleep
- I try to workout at least 2x during the workweek, usually in the morning. Doesn’t have to be an hourlong session - sometimes it’s running on the treadmill for 10-15 minutes to break a sweat.
- Use weekends to get good sleep and more extensive workouts in.
- Don’t force it when you’re in a really bad week. I find it worth it to trade 45 minutes of extra sleep for a quick workout, but when I’m consistently pushing past midnight I prioritize sleep.
This is excellent advice. I gained a ton of weight at prior firm when I started traveling. Got back on track with two things: 1) ate like a flight attendant - smaller meals, greens, low sodium, drink lots of water and not booze and 2) took comfortable sneakers and prioritized a walk/run before team dinners - hard to do when you’re just getting started, but easier to do when you know the team and have set boundaries on the road.
Give yourself some grace. When you’re just getting started at this level, it’s easy to justify sitting at a hotel desk all night and eating to feel better. Analysts are great at prioritizing fitness, partners are great at prioritizing steak and wine - you’re in the middle.
