Congratulations on the positive test result. Take one day at a time, it’s really awful that you might be made redundant, but pregnancy is a very long time and I think in 6 months time you’ll be in a very different spot. You’ve got this!!! (Also, depending on your country, it might be worth telling the company you are pregnant, in Europe this gives you very clear employment rights)
I agree that this happens but operationally many companies will either do it and just give you a better severance or just wait it out. Employee laws are much stronger than in the US
Congratulations!! I found myself in a somewhat similar situation last year- I had been layered and knew my days were numbered. I told them a bit earlier in order to get some protection (they can lay you off at any time but being pregnant does make them think twice). I managed to survive the job though pregnancy and mat leave and then they laid me off and I got a bunch of severance and more time with my baby. It’s stressful and frustrating that we get a little ‘stuck’ with fewer career choices when pregnant but hang in there!
Congratulations! You will find some money somewhere. If this is your last chance I would do anything to make it work. This is a temporary time of financial stress but the baby (would it be your first?) is a lifetime of joy. I also had my first in less than ideal circumstances, had to borrow money from (kinda broke themselves) parents, sold furniture and clothes for cash, went into some CC debt and couldn't buy my baby the nice things I wanted - but by a year later both me and hubby were earning more than we were before, and baby was happy and healthy and a joy every day. I had to let go of a lot of my previous opinions about how much money in the bank to have to be "financially responsible" - but you are a director at your firm, you're not a single teen mom, you're just in a short blip and if you take each day as it comes it will all seem steadily less and less overwhelming.
This is lovely. Thank you for sharing!!
Congratulations!!
I totally understand how you feel- I got laid off in the middle of an IVF cycle, and had my FET on the last day I had insurance. Fortunately, it was successful, but then I was unemployed for a year and a half, finally finding a job again when my baby was about 5 months old. It was absolutely so stressful, but it really helped me to focus on how excited I was about the baby, and try not to dwell on the scared and stressed feelings. I was literally interviewing for a job on my due date (baby was late, in the end, so at least my water didn’t break mid-interview!), and that interview didn’t work out.
Another friend of mine was laid off while pregnant, after having disclosed her pregnancy, so it’s absolutely correct that pregnancy can’t totally protect you from a layoff. Hopefully if it is a layoff, you’ll get some severance, which is helpful, and then don’t feel bashful about applying for and collecting unemployment! This is literally why those programs exist, so look into your options. Start cutting back spending where you can now, and divert money to savings, and I fully agree with the advice about about getting baby stuff second hand!
Don’t worry about how fast or slow the new opportunity is progressing- just keep moving forward, and maybe throw in a few other applications to other jobs as well. Companies hire pregnant people all the time, and you are not obligated to tell them about your pregnancy during the interview process. You’ve got this! Happy to dm if you want to talk more, but congratulations on the positive test, and wishing you all the best!!!
Hi! My name Alessandra Scott, if you need some help, please let me know? I am a professional nanny and I have good references. Thanks!
All the advice above is solid. Just to add some practical tips, breastfeeding and cloth diapering will save so much money when baby comes. Also buying everything second hand.
All of the above advice is incredible. It may make sense to tell your HR and manager(s) about the pregnancy asap to see if that buys you a little time (even if you’re not in Europe).
I am looking for a nanny job. If you need some help, please contact me. Thanks!
I feel you just take it one day at a time, kids add so much joy and new meanings to our lives.
