In an industry where time/reps equals skill level, taking maternity or paternity leave will slow down your development. You should still take it as it’s important to your family. But hard to argue that if you missed a year for two pregnancies(just an example) that you wouldn’t be behind your starting group.
Generally people on paternity leave are not pregnant, just to clarify
This just isn’t reality. Accounting firms are notorious for their supportive leave policies and practices. I have yet to meet someone that didn’t get their expected promotion due to family leave, raises were in line with what you expected and the only people didn’t get good bonuses were those that were gone during busy season- and why should they? I worked while heavily pregnant during busy season and got a great bonus.
Eh, I was denied an expected promotion after coming back from maternity leave even though I had discussions about it before hand. I also worked busy season heavily pregnant.
So there’s your anecdote. It does happen.
I got early promoted and a 30% raise right after taking parental leave. This one might be a you problem
Fine! You don’t have to worry about it then!
Yes and then they will lay you off in the next RIF if you use the benefit too frequently. They will downgrade your contributions because how can you contribute the same as others when you’re out on leave for several months? KPMG sucks for working parents. It’s no wonder people don’t get married or have kids, mostly in the East coast offices (mid atlantic and New England)
Is any of that actually true?
No it’s not true. My guess is people were passed up who were on leave that wouldn’t have made it either way and they immediately (and incorrectly) said that it was because of them taking leave.
If you are on parental leave during the year, you aren’t allowed to be ranked lower than you were in the previous year. If you did not get a raise/bonus/ promotion in a year you were on leave, that means there were preexisting performance issues.
There were no preexisting performance issues.. I was getting a rating of ‘In line with high performance culture’
Promos pay VCs aren’t even finalized yet 🙄
A colleague in my office knew that they were getting promoted five months before it happened.
Promotions should be based on experiences
You chose to have children instead of focusing on providing shareholder value. Seems pretty cut and dry to me
Oh I bet it is but how are you going to prove it?
What proof would be required? Copy of my discussions with my PM?
Paternity / maternity leave might actually be the one thing the firm does really well
They could afford to slowly ramp you up when you return, instead of throw you into a busy season and staff you on the worst client
