If you not CPA, you should have 2 years experience working in audit instead. During my internship in FDD, majority of my team studied Finance but they have few years of auditing before switching to FDD.
Everyone I work with in KPMG FDD is a CPA
A vast majority will be CPAs that rotated out of audit. Recruiting tends to stay within a certain profile/mold because it lowers risk. I tried joining the group a long time ago. Knowing what I know now about their work, having been in a Corp dev role and seeing their deliverables, I would have had a steep learning curve if I joined early in my career, since my mgmt consulting experience wasn’t accounting focused at all. If you want to pivot to FDD, might be worth getting a CPA.
Always being against the norm just creates a long uphill battle. I don’t have an MBA and feel like I’m always competing against the same profile of candidates that do have MBAs and it forces me to have a better network to get noticed. Not a bad thing, but more work. Also not having an MBA does immediately disqualify me from certain roles. I could see a similar dynamic in FDD.
Bullet dodged
I was thinking FDD because of the amount of technical experience you get, but have heard it is grueling. Where else would you suggest I look If I want more exposure to M&A?
Not in FDD but I think a large % of that group are Accountants with most having CPAs or being CPA eligible
I was in your shoes. I had to take 6 classes senior spring and 4 in the summer before starting to get CPA eligible. BS requirement, but it’s a requirement.
Should I do it? I minored in accounting and I guess it wouldn’t hurt, but it sounds like a pain. You think it was worth the opportunity cost of picking up additional credits?
In hindsight I wish I just majored in accounting and got the CPA out of the gate.
Could you apply to the broader strategy group? What's your experience?
~1 YOE management advisory. What is the typical background of the strategy group at KPMG? MBA required?
You don’t have to be CPA but should have accounting degree. Ping me if you want more information as I’m in KPMG FDD
Pinged you KPMG 3
You need it for FDD. Are you qualified for other parts of advisory?
I’m currently in a management advisory role but only have ~1 YOE. By qualifications do you mean MBA?
Most ppl in FDD have a CPA. A large part of it is auditing M and A related data.
For what it’s worth, I had 2 internal KPMG recruiters reach out to me asking if I was interested in coming over from FDD group at GT. I entertained the idea purely on the thought that I would be doing the same thing but get paid more. Second round came, and they said I couldn’t move forward as I’m not a CPA/eligible (for reference I studied finance not accounting). Fast forward another month and a half, and both of those recruiters reached back out to me saying they were actually interested in moving me forward without a CPA or any intentions on getting CPA. This was a turnoff to me as it told me they were desperate like the rest of these FDD practices, but weren’t having any luck hiring people.
Just sent you a message!
