You don’t tell anyone why you are taking leave. You just say it’s medical leave and that’s it. It could be a procedure, an illness, anything. One thing it’s not is anyone’s business. You’re not obligated to tell anyone why it’s needed: not your boss, HR, your colleagues, your client.
And it’s beside the point, but there is absolutely no shame in needing a break. This industry breaks us by design and you are actively taking care of yourself.
This industry is very hard. We should stop pretending that it isn’t. You are a human and the bravest thing is to take the leave. Good luck 💙
Protect your personal boundaries and never apologize for taking care of yourself—you don’t owe anyone your private info. when people are digging for details just say that you appreciate their concern and you’re excited to return when that time comes.
When you take things without apology, people assume you were entitled to those things. When you apologize, people think there’s something to be sorry for.
I’ve never taken this leave but looking back, there were times where I should have. So many of us never take the time to take care of ourselves, good on you for taking that step!
Thank you for the kind words and support :) I just got approved for a medical leave, I’m not sure how long yet because insurance is sorting it out. My doctor ordered 3-6 months. I’m feeling hopeful again since having a couple weeks away. I was literally fainting from the stress of receiving an email a few weeks ago, so I logically know my body and nervous system need a rest and I have to listen to them.
I’m honestly a little scared with award submission season in full swing. I have a project that’s been showing well. I feel so guilty taking a break and also getting wins. It feels weird. I’m really really proud of the work, but I also know pushing for this passion project on top of my already packed client project rooster is part of what burnt me out. Or at least started it.
My boss saw I could pull 80 hour weeks and churn out great work, so consistently just put me on more. Told me it was a compliment, I shouldn’t be stressed out or say no because what if the opportunities stop coming? This went on for months and my project started winning, but I was still drowning under work I could barely celebrate. Then he fired the entire creative department except for me and my writer, who was moving to the other side of the world in 2 months time. Instead of promoting me they hired an outside senior team and promoted those two dudes to ACDs to work above me. My boss made me feel like I was just a step away from the boys club with my awards, hard work, and extra hours just to give it away to someone else. I’ve never felt so small in my life despite doing everything and more to get ahead.
Sending you the biggest hug. I’ve been there in a similar situation down to the crazy hours, extra work, promises and lack of recognition. I took leave and made it out the other side. I’m so proud of you for paying attention to your body and taking the time you need. Burnout is real, and I will never let something like work come at the expense of my health again.
You should feel proud of your work. And as you recover, you’ll learn what you’re capable of when you’re not running on empty. The awards and work will shake themselves out; you deserve better, and as you recover, you’ll learn to set boundaries and standards that protect you and get you the credit you deserve. Congratulations; it will only get better from here on out 💝
If I might add that therapy is great if you don’t already use it. It might help you actually feel less shame for taking a break (which you do not deserve to feel!). Hope you enjoy your break and get lots of rest!
I was struggling hard - pretty sure I was rounded up in the layoffs because of it. I also felt asking for time off would put a target on my back.
So my advise - do what’s best for you because th company won’t protect you either way.
There’s never any shame in needing rest or a reset.
Sending love to you, I personally negotiated to work from home for a few months due to anxiety and stress with amended medical leave arranged with HR and it was a sanity saver - as at my lowest point I had severe insomnia and was sleeping 3 - 4 hours a night.
It was the best thing I could have done due to overwhelm. Because of that reset and therapy - I'm in a great place. Don't regret taking care of yourself, you are doing the right thing.
