Lately, it feels like burnout is just part of the job in finance, and everyone shrugs it off like it’s no big deal. Last week, I joked with a coworker about how I worked 70 hours and barely slept (even with the holiday), and they just said, “Same!” But is it? I can’t help wondering if we’re all just accepting something we shouldn’t. I’ve tried things like blocking off time for lunch or leaving by 7 PM twice a week, but it’s hard when the culture rewards constant hustle. Is this just how it is in our industry, or have you found ways to set boundaries without falling behind?

This is exactly why I'm exploring my exit opportunities. Yes, I make a good salary, but at what cost? I'm missing out on so much with my friends. It's just not worth it.

I can totally relate to this. The "always-on" mentality feels super overwhelming, and it’s so hard when others normalize burnout. For me setting boundaries has been key, but I don't know if the culture will ever shift. I’ve found that communicating my limits and prioritizing tasks has helped, though it’s an ongoing struggle.

Exactly this OP! Everyone I know working in finance seems to be burned out. We talk about it, shrug, and then get back on the hamster wheel. Somethings gotta give :-/

Used to live that life but I had to save myself. I now work somewhere I leave at 5 at the dot and fully remote. I took a small pay cut but it’s worth it

I’m curious to know if anyone has experience working part-time in architecture? I have been working for large international firms in NYC for the past 10 years. So I work all day every day. My evenings and often the weekends are all absorbed by work duties. Working part-time would allow me to find a better balance, and carve out space for side gigs and eventually start my own firm. Any recommendations?

Might be the wrong bowl but finding it extremely difficult to focus on work post busy season. It’s been 2 weeks since we filed and I’m still taking lots of naps and breaks (I’m talking like 3-4 cumulative hrs worked during the day). Idk if I’m taking longer to recover from busy season bc I’m getting old or if I’m over public accounting (but then where do i go). Tried to schedule time with a therapist but everyone has a months-long waitlist so next step might be trying to find a life/career coach

Why do leaders keep comparing how “good”the new staff/seniors have it because they make more money starting out then they did and working 55 hours is better than the 70-80 hours they used to work? Instead they should compare what options they have available to them and what their goals are.

What would you do if you didn’t need money? I have a fair amount coming one day and don’t actually need to work to live a good life (middle / upper-middle class). I work because of this vague notion of “ambition” and because everyone I grew up around is highly competitive and hard driving. I just feel unhappy so often and am wondering what this is all leading to. Scared I’m wasting my life being unhappy / in turmoil cause it’s what my culture wants me to do.

Has anyone left healthcare and is now really happy? I’m an MSN, RN with 12 years hospital experience. I’m burned out and tired of making crap pay. I have an opportunity outside of healthcare that would pay more and challenge me in new ways that I haven’t experienced before. It’s a total shift that would really heal my work-life balance, job satisfaction and budget. My only fear is that I would not be using the license and degree that I worked so hard for. I would appreciate any input!!!!

Is your compensation and performance reviewed automatically on a regular/annual basis? I don’t get either of these unless I ask for it! Found out others in our company experienced the same as me. Lowball Salaries trending as a common pain point

I like my team and work life balance, during the pandemic was very beneficial to my wellbeing. However feel I owe it to myself now, to be earning what I’m worth in the market (I’m underpaid by a fair bit) especially with inflation costs

Left IBD to quickly - VP1 opps?

Long story short - was lured into an opportunity to do BD for a large PE PortCo… better work/life balance, but honestly miss the deal cycle.

Anyone know of open VP1 opps right now?

Quick background - former MM banker (think Raymond James, Piper Sandler size) doing FinTech and Asset Management within FIG, but also open to other sectors.

Thanks!

Anyone from Embark able to tell me about some benefits you have. Like how long is Paternity leave and do you have to be with the firm for a year to use it? Also what health insurance do you have? Also how often are you traveling / in office? Thanks!
