I’ve been in the legal field 30 years and only know one certified paralegal and it did nothing for her career. None of the attorneys at my firm even know what it is. It is experience that matters.
I haven’t taken the CP yet, but it’s something I’ve been considering. I’ve heard from colleagues who have that it can help with career advancement, especially if you want to move into a more senior role or a specialized area.
I've worked as a paralegal, mainly corporate, for over 20 years but only CP since 2016. When I found myself looking for a job due to an acquisition-related layoff, I noticed that higher paying positions were asking for CP and I decided to pursue CP. I think that employers see a CP as someone who has a stronger commitment to "their craft" and are willing to pay more. Not sure how it translates at a firm, but I think you will find better opportunities as a CP and it is definitely worth it.
As someone who worked as a litigation paralegal for 12 years, the CP credential is a good thing to have. Since I've changed to IP and corporate work, it doesn't matter as much. The experience is what counts the most.
I got the credential. I have found most firms/lawyers have no idea what it is. It's not valued (in BigLaw, anyway). My firm won't let me include it my signature block or business card.
