Mischief is overhyped, but it’s hard to argue with their dominance the last couple of years. They’re only 5 years old and have won everything, steal every piece of business, poach all the good people from our agencies, who all seem happy and well treated once they’re there, and they constantly produce so much work it’s hard to even keep up with.
It’s a pretty simple take. I’m paraphrasing from interviews but their view seems to be that, AI can help you with the making but they don’t outsource the thinking to to it.
They constantly post quick AI created content, you could call it “slop,” on Insta and launched The Candy Shop, which is their gen-AI production arm.
To me it seems like an obvious way to signal to clients they’re not going to get defensive or shame them when they ask “can we use AI to make this faster / less expensively.”

Uncommon on the downward trend rn imo. Work quality seems to have dropped in recent years.

Mischief takes risks which is impressive and how it should be done! They know how to win and make other agencies look ancient and outdated. Good for them.
Mischief: wins because they’re willing to show simple, provocative ideas. They want no “just for pay” clients.
Uncommon: had a few good runs but now fairly standard work.
Mojo: started strong and then seems to have become too big too fast. Lost their mojo.
Highdive: cool work for specialized client.
I would love to work for any of those shops. Please contact me immediately if you are looking for a writer with a GSOH and a big heart. (Imagine if getting hired was that easy!) 🤩

Overhyped
Have they done anything groundbreaking in recent years?
In terms of craft Uncommon is the most interesting to me on this list. They get the shift from a verbal to a visual culture and their concepts travel really well on social. I think they’re the only agency here helmed by a former art director instead of copywriter?
I don’t get the claim they’ve dropped off. Check out the live trailer they did for sk8te, fans liked it more than the game!
Mono is not, and was never, at the same caliber as the other agencies on this list.
