Litigators: better to 2L summer at Williams & Connolly or Gibson (DC or LA)? Asking for a student friend with offers. No particularly defined goals beyond litigation, clerkship tbd. I’m transactional and don’t want to give uninformed advice. Thanks!

Both are good options, including for appellate. I would probably pick whichever is a better cultural fit. If truly indifferent, W&C because it’s more difficult to lateral in unless Gibson DC has changed recently.

The real question is LA v. DC.

like

Gibson

Williams & Connolly

Gibson LA is both in Century City and Downtown. Downtown is insalubrious and unsafe for the most part. So Century City or DC would probably be a better choice. W&C’s compensation is atypical, so I suggest doing some research to make sure it never dips below market. Both firms are among top shops for lit.

For anyone who receives a quarterly bonus or raise in some form, does your employer start to schedule you for less hours when your raise kicks in, or pull you from a future schedule entirely once you receive a bonus; only to put you back on once the hours you would have worked and earned the amount given are passed? Ie; a part time employee getting $200.00 in a quarterly bonus and then not being scheduled a whole week during a bi-weekly pay period where they would have earned more on the clock…?

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

In terms of a place to live, where in Manhattan can I find a place that's similar to River North in Chicago?

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. But we are all old and when we graduated 150k to 200k was about the max student loan debt people graduated with. So educate me. What is the average student loan debt these days?

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much.
