I’m looking at a company that’s beginning to build its HR function in the U.S. (they already have overseas teams). What are some questions I should be asking the CHRO or things I should be considering when I evaluate the HR roadmap? How do you evaluate an HR strategy at this stage? I’ve worked at startups, but this would be my first time helping build the HR function.

Additional Posts in Chicago Lawyers

Has anyone recently had to go through a background check to lateral? Been waiting on Cook County to respond to the third party criminal record check for a few weeks and trying to gauge how much longer it will take 😩

I graduated from JMLS about 15 years ago. Been a long time since I had to update my resume, but now I do. Should I keep the name as-is or change it to UIC Law?

What is the benefit of working at the Cook County State's Attorneys Office other than the rapid trial experience one gains? I was a non traditional student - I do have a job lined up in private practice. Im not particularly fond of the practice area but its decent paying for entry level. I attended a networking event and met so many State's attorneys who seemed to enjoy the work bc of the experience they were gaining.

Sort of feel its a job more geared to folks who never worked in law before.

Anyone in Chicago know how long the hold-up for Cook County background checks is? I know they are backed up so just hoping for an estimate.

Have any of you started a PLLC for a solo practice? If so, what was the process for getting your firm to become a PLLC in Illinois. Did you file for an llc first then file a cert with the Supreme Court. PLLC filings for IL do not list attorneys as a professional group.

Anyone have any tips for switching from midsized to firm to big law in Chicago? Litigation, non equity partner that is going nowhere at my current firm. Doing insurance defense but have significant trial, deposition and discovery experience.

I thought I would ask this here too because some of you may spend a lot of time at the Daley center and I’m dying to know the answer to this pressing concern.

The tree at the NW corner of Dearborn and Washington at Daley Center. WHY is it always covered with thousands of birds. I could walk across the loop and not see a single bird but when I get to DCP, every day, rain or shine or heat or cold, thousands of birds. What is up with this tree? Why is it special?

I’m a business/commercial lawyer with 8 years experience looking to relocate to Chicago from NYC area, while also trying to make the jump to in-house after only ever working at a boutique firm. It’s been 5 months and I haven’t had any luck applying to job postings on the usual sites (no calls, no interviews, nothing). I can’t tell if this is due to covid, the market, the fact that I don’t have any in-house experience, the fact that I live out of state, or something else entirely. Any insights??
