Looking for advice: been at my new job for about 6 months and absolutely hate it. I’m overworked and underpaid. A friend is a VP at a fund that I’m interested in joining and has offered to refer me but he won’t be involved in the hiring process past that point. Do I take the referral now and risk them thinking I’m a job hopper or do I suffer for 6 more months and hope they’re hiring then?

We live in a world where job hopping is common. I strongly believe folks should not hold a single job through their 20s and should focus on skill acquisitions.

If you feel undervalued, not happy with your work environment, I suggest moving sooner rather than later. But have a good explanation as to why the move makes sense (this should be apart from the fact that you’re not happy or higher pay). Some things to consider would be why does that fund make sense? Do they have something that entices you? While I agree that the mental toll and over-working might be taking up your time, it definitely is helpful to contemplate if that’s exactly what you want to do. Otherwise you risk moving from one toxic environment to another. Also Imp to note that Loyalty works both ways.

The question on why you're leaving will come up but as long as you have a reasonable explanation it will be fine. Think how how you would exaplin it professionally in 3-4 sentences. It's ok to be honest and say "I took a role and it was not what I was expecting"

Seize that opportunity - it might not be there in 6 months!

UK market is open only for niche skillsets ( Data engineer + analytics). Firms aren't interested in sponsoring rest all skill sets, as they can be filled internally. They have limited quota every year, and are very choosy when it comes to allocation. Preference is first given to EU nationals and then Asians during shortlist stage.

Referral works, but the person who is referring you should have enough clout in the organization to present your profile!
