Does he get his actual work done? I would approach the camera issue separately and then if there is a suspicion he is not actually working, treat that as a performance issue around work not getting done.
I had to tell one of my reports that our partners don't consider cameras optional for some meetings and he should treat it as any other work requirement (ie something that will hold him back or potentially become a performance management issue if he doesn't do it). He didn't like it but decided it was not worth fighting.
I am losing patience with these people who will not turn on their camera, so many companies are requiring people to go back to work. I feel like if you don’t want to turn your camera on then we will see you in the office .
If you cant be present on a camera.... Then bring your tail into the office. Of course once in a while is one thing, but to continually be an issue and being distracted > time for a chat.
Someone who had to step away. Over the course of an hour, I sent 3 dms, an email and finally a text to his phone. Note that this is teams, so while he is “present” during the meeting, his status shows as not been seen for 2 hours. The text I sent was asking him was “hey just checking in, is everything alright?” Another 15 min goes by and he replies yes. I then say ok, I was worried because you didn’t answer my dms or emails over the past hour. He says to me “oops didn’t notice”. I then say ok, camera on please per leaders request. He says well I really don’t like being on camera. (He’s worked for me for 4 years and has never said this before). And when I do remind him (like when we are on client calls together, he says he “forgot” and then turns it on. So my question is, do I talk with him about this or just let it go? He certainly wants to get to the consultant level. But IMO if that is what he wants he needs to show is face and interact with people virtually. Am I over thinking this? Am I just reading too much into this because lately his status often shows the last time he was seen was HOURS ago? Thank you for your thoughts on this…
Yeah I kind of felt in my gut that we will need to have a conversation about it. 🫤
He does get “most” of his work done, however I don’t feel comfortable not checking in and making sure he is on target. Thank you for the suggestion of framing it as something that could “help” him gain visibility and start making connections with clients. I think I will start with that…
