Looking for management advice. A first year doesn’t take well to feedback and deflects by providing a lot of excuses even for simple tasks and wastes time in doing so. Tried to tell me how I (much more senior attorney) should work so there are clearer expectations on his end upon receiving feedback once. I’ve tried various approaches and escalated as necessary. Can’t cut them off yet on a project. Looking for advice on managing unprofessional conduct

This is the typical way and will immediately solve your problem. Don’t make his or her lack of professionalism into your problem.

Go ahead and have a frank conversation with them once. Tell them you're having issues and want to offer constructive feedback which will make working together easier in future. Then see if they adapt. If they don't, just stop working with them.

Document and let the partners with HR resolve it.

What does “Tried to tell me how I … should work so there are clearer expectations on his end upon receiving feedback once” mean?

If you’re not getting any improvement and have to keep giving him work, give him a shorter leash. Very short deadlines and break down tasks into a small chunks as you can so that he has to be turning each piece to you. And obviously assign as little and as low importance work to him as you can get away with.

like

Talk to your PD manager and have them speak with the associate about it if direct conversations aren't going anywhere. If you're senior enough to review this associate, include this info in your annual review so it's documented and the partners managing the review reinforce the messaging.

like

Tell them explicitly when giving a task that any unclear instructions should be raised with you immediately so that they can complete the task. You then have easy push back if they deliver poor work product. And when they raise questions, ask them what theyve done to answer them. It will take a bit of work on your end at the beginning, but will help them realize that they will save themselves time and trouble if they put in the effort at the beginning and try to solve their own problems.

Or just stop working with them.

Ah, the excuse-machines. An oldey but a goody. You’ve done what you can, but they have no interest in learning. Oh well, there are tens of thousands clamoring to replace them.

Send everything exclusively in email, with the expectation it will be read by others. When they get fired and try to bring some frivolous claims, make sure your emails are beyond reproach.

About to finish my first year. I’m a specialist. Only going to hit 65% of my hours (took a 4 week vacation cause of wedding/hm).

I never say no to work and i have fantastic reviews, and the head of my practice (with whom I work a lot for) has great things to say about me.

I’ve been fully utilized starting ~June, but first few months were slow. Am i fine?!

I’ve been at a job for a few months and hate it - partners set unrealistic deadlines, micromanage, and create work that truly is not necessary/push urgency when there is no real urgency. I had other offers prior to accepting this job that may still be options, and going back to my old job (for a pay cut) might also be an option. I can’t tell if this is just burnout, growing pains, or just an untenable work environment. Would you ride it out for a year at new job or pursue other options? HELP!

Should I disclose or hide the fact that I am on maternity leave? I have an interview with a big law firm in NY. I’m currently working for a law firm in Atlanta. I imagine I will be asked whether I have returned to the office or working remotely from NY. My husband and I have been living in New York since the pandemic to be near family. My current firm asked everyone to go back last week but since I am on leave I didn’t have to. I want to avoid lying without jeopardizing my chances.

Boomer. I am in between jobs. Laid off in 10/21 after 16+ yrs, with an ABA firm. RIF. Still on excellent terms. Took my time living off generous package and didn’t seriously start applying until 01/22. Made a rookie mistake and accepted first offer.
Turns out job wasn’t as advertised. Mutual parting of ways 3/22. Due diligence is critical.
Now interviewing a LOT. Some temp work, I still have “it”. I relate to all gens. Willing to mentor AND learn from all. Tech savvy, CTE from day one. Leads?
