Looking to get out of tax soon… Almost 2 years and I can no longer handle the hours when it’s busy season. I’m having a difficult time figuring out where to go after tax (might be the sleep deprivation)… If you left the tax bubble, where did you go? what roles did you think your skills would add value? Just looking for some inspiration.. :)

Following! Am absolutely on edge this week and seriously considering what I’m going to do next. Will not be doing another year like this. Stressed to the point I’m waking up in the night and immediately thinking about issues. Definitely with you on getting out.

like

that’s exactly my issue. i can’t sleep peacefully, im missing out on things i love to do but can’t because i have to work… i feel like life is passing me by and i refuse to be miserable lol

Law school is where I’m going. Double the money. Same hours

By the looks of my group it’s already busy season 75-80% of the year anyway. I got lucky with my clients but some of my teammates are staffed so horrendously that they work more hours than my friends in BL for 1/3 the pay

Experience in the tax bubble gives you a good background from which to move forward. If you go into corporate accounting the hours can be more steady. Or you could go into financial planning, where your tax knowledge is a transferrable skill. Or even something like forensic accounting could be an option.

After tax is more tax. Do in house tax team

Do you have experience in that? What are those hours like?

I spent about 10 years in tax, then moved to non-profit healthcare. I now assist with statutory reporting and JEs. Life is much better! No overtime, fully remote, sabbaticals. Plus I feel like I am using my skills to actually help the community.

sounds like you found a great job. hoping i can borrow some of your good juju!

How many hours?

I think because we are salaried we do not meet the criteria for over time. It’s frustrating knowing our interns are making over time haha.

Are private companies easier to work at than public companies in accounting? We have such an accelerated close deadline at the publicly traded company I’m at now, I really hate the inflexible tight deadlines and analysis seems to drag on forever after that. We also close AP/AR very early in the month yet that doesn’t stop payments/receipts from happening so we’re constantly adjusting our accruals until the end of month. Do private companies start their close after the month actually ends?
