Looking to make a switch… 2nd year tax attorney with extensive, broad, and autonomous experience handling federal, state, & international tax matters. I prefer the planning/consulting side but I’m not opposed to some audit/controversy work. In the Houston area. Any recommendations (or referrals)? I prefer somewhere where I have some autonomy over my choice of cases and I enjoy meeting with clients at their place of business every once in while.

I’m a tax attorney in Dallas. Going to be hard to find a firm the gives 2nd years autonomy over matters. You may be able to go to client events now and again, but that’s also not super common. I’m in biglaw. Are you looking for a smaller firm?

What size firm are you at? If you PM me, I’d be happy to make talk. I know our recruiter well even though I’m not out of our Houston office and could make a referral.

Confession: The only in-law that I had a great relationship with passed away unexpectedly. The two remaining in-laws were on thin ice with me prior due to years of drama, nagging, and disgusting display of wealth. I believe their demand of money and general assholish behavior drove in law to his death. I love my S.O. but I can’t deal with the drama anymore.

I want to have a family and a future that is drama-free and full of love and don’t want to surround myself with negativity.

Additional Posts in Tax Law

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)

Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?
