It’s worth noting that even Mr. S. N. Subrahmanyan himself later clarified and expressed regret over those remarks. He admitted that the wording was poor and that he regretted his wife being dragged into the controversy. He also explained that the statement was made casually during an internal discussion, not as an official directive.
He further mentioned that he was under considerable pressure at that time — with project delays, multiple high-profile clients reaching out about progress, and challenges in mobilizing staff and labour.
If a seasoned professional with decades of experience and in a senior leadership position can feel that level of pressure and make such remarks in the moment, it’s only fair to recognize that even individuals with 4–5 years of experience can also experience similar stress or pressure in demanding project environments.
Expecting younger professionals to always handle pressure flawlessly, while overlooking how even highly experienced leaders can be affected by it, seems rather inconsistent.
And honestly, if a 4–5-year-experienced employee made a similar “casual” remark in a meeting — especially involving teammates or female colleagues — it would probably result in a POSH complaint and a career risk within hours.
But when it comes to highly influential leaders, there’s often a corporate cushion of support — or as people like to say, “HR suddenly finds its invisible cape of protection.” 😏
