I wish they had easier pathways for people to move states! During COVID NY had conditional licenses - teachers that were certified in other states could get a temporary license while fulfilling all the NYS requirements (I think we have a ton of them - more than the average state). I’m pretty sure those ended. Kinda seems silly to me. I wouldn’t say we’re in a teacher shortage in my area but the number of qualified applicants we’re getting per position open has been declining over the last few years. If they made it easier for people to get their foot in the door maybe that would change? Probably not lol it’s education, but NY is a good state to teach in I think! Buffalo is a lovely place to live! Go bills
I think it’s pretty hard to argue that “education should be left to the states” and then complain that there aren’t national standards for teacher requirements.
Having said that, it is pretty amazing that we’ve created national education standards for each grade in math and English, but we don’t have national standards for teaching certificates. This is a pretty solid argument for keeping the DOE intact.
I’ll also add that most districts in Maine probably would consider teachers from other states that already have high standards. I once applied for a job in North Carolina- just for fun- and the application clearly states that I needs a NC license, but I got a call from the principal thirty minutes after I submitted the application- on a Sunday no less.

What I said was, if we're going to bother with a federal DOE, then a universal certificate would be one useful thing it could do. Since the DOE still hasn't figured it out well into its fifth decade, it's pretty obvious that no such priority exists. If Maine wants to shoot itself in the foot, it's on them.
