PSA - this is what happens when working parents have the audacity to focus on family instead of their career. This is why we push through these jobs even when we feel like we absolutely can't survive another day.
It depends where you work, how much they bill you out at, and how many hours you work. Prevailing salaries of others is informative, but your billable rate and hours worked are really the meat of it.
If they’re billing you out at $150 an hour, you’re billing 1500 hours, you’re overpaid. If they’re billing you out at $300 an hour, you’re billing 1500 hours, you’re adequately compensated (maybe a $10-20k bonus would be warranted). If your rate and hours exceed $300/hr and/or 1500 annually, you’re underpaid. For instance, if you are build out at $300/hr, but billing 2000 hours a year, you should be around $185-215k a year in compensation. Impossible to say that you are earning too little or are underpaid without knowing your rate and hours worked.
After a break in employment, it’s common to have a “transition” job that helps you get back into the workplace. This $113k job could serve that function for you.
I suggest you now leverage this transition job into a market-paying one with a different employer. It is possible for you to double or even triple your salary very quickly based on market rates for your years of experience, so don’t settle. Once you’re back in the workforce, you are treated like any other lateral.
I would only do a job like this for 1-2 years max. I do believe this employer is taking advantage of you, so I wouldn’t expect them to raise your salary to market levels.
Whoa. What’s your billable hour requirement?
i made that income before law school and make double that with half the years of experience you have. Yes, you are wildly underpaid. LE is a hot field in Cali. Know your worth!
Do you have 10 YOE, or are you 10 years removed from law school?
Because that’s a 1st year rate in a LCOL area in CA
Like all other said, this seems extremely low. Unless you love what you’re doing now, I would start looking, you’ll make at least double if not triple.
That is wildly low. How could you make it 10 years as an attorney and earn so little?
How long of a break did you take? This is giving more of a 1-3 YOE salary.
You could probably easily make a lot more. All depends on how many hours you want to bill. If you’re working reduced hours for reduced comp, would your firm but you back at full time?
Are you looking now?
Are you working part time? How long of a break did you take? What is your bonus? And you really don't know the answer to whether you should be making more?
