Management where I work is obsessed with these new AI agents and wants us to write as little manual code as possible. It feels like I’m becoming a glorified prompt engineer. I’m concerned I'm losing my technical skills, but if the entire industry is heading this way, maybe it’s pointless to fight it. Are we all sabotaging our future by just going along with it?

It’s for sure an interesting time to be a developer. On one hand the AI tooling when properly used can make it easier/faster to get things done. On the other, these tools aren’t perfect so you have to review what is generated. I’m embracing AI because if not I can quickly find myself out of a job. Better to be at the front of the wave than left behind by it.

You can be sabotaging or improving - depends on the situation. AI is a tool, like any other. The better you are at the underlying task, the better you will be at using the tool.

I work at the tip of the spear in AI-human task acceleration. I am very good at using the AI to code because I know how to code and I know how the AI codes. I have a dude I supervise who needed to complete something in a very short time; I directed him to use the AI to do it; he failed immediately. I got on a call with him, shared my screen, and got it done in less than 5 minutes including post-AI cleanup. It was an excellent teaching moment.

AI amplifies one's skill level. If you are 15% better than someone, you will look like you're 150% better; the wider the gap, the wider the performance boost of the tooling. AI makes it really easy for the best to be wildly more productive, and for the worst to get lost.

Train your technical skills while you get comfortable with AI. You'll just become that much better.

managing ai agents and their outputs are part of the job. as well as understanding what they did. so don’t fight it, embrace it and stay ahead of the curve.

For what it’s worth, teams still need people who can reason about performance, security, and failure modes. AI is not great at owning those end-to-end. If you lean into those areas, you’re probably future-proofing more than you think.

Need career advice. Trying to break into a finance role, preferably an Analsyt role but I have no transferable experience. I worked as a mortgage loan officer (which is sales) for 2 years after college, but since mortgage is such a niche industry, no hard skills transfer and have no relevant undergrad internships unfortunately. I know I can essentially get any sales job I want in finance IE: financial advisor etc. but don’t want to be stuck in sales forever. Any advice?
