Managing partner of a Midwestern family law firm. Four lawyers and three staff. We have been a 100% remote and electronic practice since March. With COVID numbers spiking again, we have no plans to return to our office space anytime soon. In 7 months we have not gotten the value of our $35k in rent payments. Interested to know what other similarly sized firms are doing about their rent and office space please?

I'm currently interviewing for a remote role for a company based in NY.

The thing is I'm based in a different city (southern U.S.)

My question is:

When it comes time to talk compensation, should I base the market rate for the role on my city of residence or NY?

Would it make sense to ask them directly how they determine comp for NY-bases vs. other city-based employees?

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. 7 year lawyer here. Been with the same big national firm all 7 years (not BigLaw) doing complex litigation. Been working remote a long time due to moving around for wife’s job. What are your strategies for completing work efficiently? How do you figure out how long projects should take? A consistent piece of feedback on my yearly reviews has been that I over-bill & spend too much time on assignments. It’s something I actively work on, but I still have no concrete sense of how long I should spend on basic tasks (e.g., drafting a motion to dismiss). My firm is right to expect that I manage my time better as a mid-level associate. WFH has made my time management worse.

I currently work at an international law firm (4 years) and recently accepted an offer to go in house. The main attorney I support did not take the news well and was very angry with me. I recommended a candidate for hire to a manager that reports directly to me. This person is a perfect match, but wanted the manager to obviously recommend. It has to be a fit. The manager just told me my recommendation is not her top pick. I feel frustrated because as much as we talk about the position, I wonder if we are mot aligned on criteria. What do I do? Do I push more for the person I want or will I cause an issue with the hiring manager? How do I get her to see this person’s value?

Utilization director told me today that the layoffs won't affect me. My heart goes out to everyone that had to hear otherwise. Here's to hoping y'all find something better and prosper.

What can I do outside the office to boost my resume and be a substantially more attractive candidate for top consulting firms in ~12 months time. Working in disputes and valuation role but want to go into management consulting next year (post MBA role). I feel like my job isn’t enough because skills aren’t considered as transferable outside this field.
