I think the job is what you make of it. If you are high performing, you’re going to move up no matter where you are.
That is the general rule. If you work in retail, a lot of professionals will label you an outcast. (Not all, but most.) What’s funny is our DMs and Rms come strutting through our stores acting like they are cool. Customers will actually say, do they not realize they work for a grocery store? It doesn’t matter to attorneys and doctors. They would rather not foster friendships with anyone in retail. They will be kind to your face, but secretly laugh if you are under the impression that you are on their level.
It’s one of the perks of working retail. You are not much better than a garbage man in the eyes of professionals. But at the end of the day, are their opinions really that important? My life goes on. Someone’s opinion of me is not important. If I am driven by peoples opinions of me, I am the one with the problem. Be happy and live your life. Chances are excellent that the people who stereotype you are miserable people. Just do your job and enjoy life. It goes by very fast!
I think older generations harbor that opinion of retail workers. Because of the scarcity of professional positions, younger people realize that they may need to take a retail job at least temporarily. I work at Trader Joe’s and have many colleagues with higher credentials that needed A JOB, myself included. And I’m fairly happy there right now.

I don’t think so at all. The amount of stuff you have to deal with and the pressure from the higher ups sometimes is overwhelming. You all are way more talented, patient, tolerant and hospitable than most everyday people
