Some journalists have become ideologues. I mean, read the NYT article carefully. All they offer is innuendo. They present literally zero actual evidence of anything improper. Trying to link us to some crook because our pension fund has an investment in a fund that has an investment in something else is absurd. And terrible reporting.
The most damning thing I saw in that article was that it was a bunch of ex-McK execs at Valeant who decided to jack up prices to such extremes that it became a scandal. Nothing illegal about that (to my knowledge - I don’t know all details and it sounds like one of them did get charged for something). But still not really a good look. But they buried that lead under a bunch of garbage innuendo exactly as you say.
Anyway, which firm has the confidence to put anything under spotlight? McKinsey is just the unlucky one to be picked on by NYT.
NYT is likely biased in going after it but absolutely stupid if you believe McK isn't full of shady business. The Saudi business in itself is lack of morality.
Having active partners on the board for MIO was just asking for trouble.
I think the criticism that has rung the most true to me across all these stories is the lack of appropriate controls.
Sometimes the lack leads to almost undeniable issues (e.g. w/ opioids), and other times to the appearance of impropriety (the kindest reading of this situation; especially when taken in tandem w/ the DOJ settlement)
But in all cases, a more robust risk management approach would have done wonders.
Some NYT articles were pretty bad for mck, but this topic in particular seems such a long shot. Almost as if someone at the times had something personal against mck 🙄
Seems to be a well measured response. I'd like to see their response to the other recent "uncoverings" in the news as well to get their perspective before rushing to my own conclusions
It stinks of defensiveness and over-compensation. You will never know what kind of handshakes happen under the table to keep the brand clean
Absolutely love the strong wording and clear & firm positioning. Kudos to the team that put this together
