Mid-level in big law in CA, 19 weeks pregnant with my first (~10 months at firm), just got a bad review. They’ve known I’m pregnant since 13 weeks. Told we’d revisit performance during annual reviews in Dec/Jan — but I’m due early Dec. Fully expect to be let go. Planned to job search in-house during leave anyway. Is it more realistic to stay and hope I’m not fired potentially days before leave starts, or am I too far along to negotiate leave if I were lucky enough to get a new offer?

I would engage an employment law attorney now to understand your options so you have a response ready if you lose your job before your parental leave starts. This is unlikely since you’re due before the annual reviews, and they can’t give you your review while you’re on leave (so you’ll receive it when you’re back). With the new law that came out last year, women are more protected during their pregnancy BEFORE the baby arrives, so an atty could help with understanding how you may be protected right now. The final half of both my pregnancies was hell on earth and my work availability suffered greatly, so if you’re already getting pushback at 19 weeks, it probably won’t get easier/better as you progress. I’m sorry you’re going through this!! I would keep your goal to getting to maternity leave while still employed and get the paid leave. While on leave, you can usually further extend your leave past the paid portion for unpaid leave, so that can stretch out your “employed” period of time. Check your firm’s policy on whether you need to be active after leave to not have to pay the time back if you quit after taking leave.

Thanks! I’m fully expecting to be pushed out after that review, and was just trying to buy enough time to get me to my leave (this was my first review there), I just have a newfound fear that they’d let me go before my leave by moving my annual review up a few weeks because they mentioned we’d reconnect in December during annual reviews “before my leave” (I actually plan to go out in November but didn’t tell them that). I know it’d be terrible optics for them to do that when I’m about to pop but I also don’t trust them and don’t want to be naive.

Thoughts are with you so much! I am in similar position except I was going to start trying this fall but everything is on hold until I can land somewhere new. Unfortunately I’ve only been at my current firm for a year so it’s been really difficult!

I know this is invasive and very personal but my advice is always to try as soon as you’re ready to be a parent. When I was finally ready to try and timed things up perfectly I had no idea how long it would take to get pregnant (over a year). At the very start of trying I’d been at my firm 3 great years and suddenly a horrible partner got her claws into me and I had to leave, but what if I got pregnant?! I need my leave! So I stayed 6 more months after wanting to leave, still wasn’t pregnant, and decided I needed to go. Lateraled, and then I thought, “well now I can’t get pregnant right away bc I want to be at my firm for at least a year first!” I kept trying anyway, got pregnant exactly 3 months after starting (9 months after starting to try) and thought, ok, close to cutting it to my one year, but it’ll work out! And then I miscarried anyway. Got pregnant again 3 months later and God willing everything will continue to be great, but now I’m in this new situation and scared I potentially won’t get my full leave. I thought I had timed things up perfectly (even waited a year longer than I wanted to so I’d be the perfect “year” before going on leave) and there was still no great time. You really can’t even predict this. I am sending all my good vibes to you and hope it all works out!!

6 months pregnant and just laid off. And 40% of my severance was just taken in taxes .. I just spoke with paid family leave and I no longer qualify even though I had been paying into the program (thanks NY).. I already applied for unemployment but doctors are telling me I’ve got 10-14 weeks left in this pregnancy.. so stressed having twins and being unemployed, no maternity leave, no paychecks coming in, and I’ve been applying but not a single interview.. just ugh. 😭

Remember one thing - If some companies are laying off employees then it's equally a good chance for the other companies to get talented resource . Here things will remain balanced mostly and there's no need to fear . Not all companies do layoff at the same time. You may end up getting a 100% hike too. Just believe in yourself and focus on your skillset, time to brush up and pull up your socks. Stay safe , stay positive !

I just got a really great offer, only downside is the eligibility for maternity leave is after 12 months of employment. We got a faint positive today but have had so many chemical pregnancies over the past year that I am not confident it will stick this time BUT I am on aspirin and progesterone for this try … so it could.. I want to see if I could negotiate being eligible earlier but I also don’t want them to think I’m pregnant when I’m not actually… How would you approach the conversation?

For everyone asking how much hike can we expect at this rating(vc/hc/ec), please understand the below points:
1. Rating is only applicable on variable pay
2. Hike % is independent of the rating
3. Hike depends on a lot of factors like your current salary, how is it comparable to the market or the level you are in, do you have a progression/promotion, etc

I am currently looking at Notting Hill, Chelsea, and St John Woods, but I won’t be able to visit before my move. Any neighborhood recs?
