Moving to NY soon. I've seen some nice apartments in Murray Hill but every time I bring it up people make fun of it. What's wrong with the area? Single, male, 29.

Nothing wrong with it. Ignore those snobs. They probably live in Bushwick next to a dumpster center and their local coffee shop is run by hipsters than charge $8 for a cup of golden milk latte

It’s because New Yorkers shun anything that’s remotely ‘basic’ and Murray hill generally attracts recent graduates from state schools. Think college football gear, sweatpants/baseball caps, and a whole scene whenever santacon, st pattys, or cinco de Mayo comes around. There’s a huge concentration of sports bars in Murray hill for a reason.

I see.. not a problem for me :)

Has a reputation as being for finance bros/former frat guys; cheaper than other areas of Manhattan but not as fancy to live in (lots of flex units)

like

Generally yes, lots of young people (I’m in my early 20s); pretty close to the EV where a lot of my friends live. Only downside is the nearest subway to me is Grand Central (still a 10 min walk)

like

young, fratty crowd. lots of offices, not too much of a neighborhood personality.

like

If you’re an attractive guy, move here! You’ll fit right in. And it’s true a lot of the girls in the neighborhood have the blonde cheerleader look

One of the classic landing pads for the city - MH & HK. Good value for money but not much in a way of neighbourhood feel. It does it’s job tho so can’t go wrong with it given your profile and attitude to things

likehelpful

I disagree. I’ve been in New York for 20 years and lived in every neighborhood in Manhattan except for upper West side and lower Manhattan. there’s definitely A neighborhood feel here due to the large concentration of young people and it’s all independent restaurants and small businesses- not a lot of big box suburban brand stores! Lots of people in the neighborhood know one another and after living in every part of town I decided I like Murray Hill the best

like

Murray hill is great

Moved here in July - mid 20s M. Its pretty good - lots of people my age, good grocery store / going out options nearby and depending on where you are v accessible to the rest of the city (in both directions).

Sure its not the West Village but little else is. Would much rather live here than FiDi, EV or brooklyn

WV comparison and bklyn generalisation just makes it obvious you don’t know bklyn

When I first moved to NY in 2004, my first place was on 39th and 2d. It was fine! I later relocated to park slope after a couple of years, though.

like

Small world! I’m on 39th and between 1 and 2

It’s very frat and finance bro and blonde cheerleaders. I bought my place here and after a while you get used to the shouting at the bar tv. Even when I was 24 I never was this… obnoxious. Think white america bros in high school college this is where they end up.

like

There are a lot of haters because many of the people who live here are “mainstream” i.e. not hipster, punk, emo, or “artists” and a lot of them come from wealthy families who pay their rents. The neighborhood is pretty plain vanilla for New York City so many people don’t like that it doesn’t have the funky edgy atmosphere. Most of the hate is about the fact that the neighborhood represents the mainstream popular culture instead of counterculture. But it’s great here- It’s all young people, a lot of good restaurants, easy to walk everywhere, and some of the best looking singles in the city. I enjoy living in an affluent neighborhood so let those haters keep hating!

But if you’re a woman who is into white broey guys there’s nowhere better to be 😊😉

I work in a firm that is known for litigation defense. I’ve been developing my own plaintiffs practice as well. I am able to pay the bills with my hourly defense work, which gives me time to focus on a handful of high value PI case a year on contingency. I was recently negotiating a case and was told part of the reason the claims rep/OC was jerking me around was because they didn’t see me as a plaintiffs attorney. Is there any way to change this perception or does it just come over time?

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. My entrepreneurial pursuits remain hampered. For the interim, I’ve been looking for a remote opportunity where I can leverage my skills in marketing, sales, social media, and elsewhere for a decent sum. I have a social media presence which, in recent years, reached millions. There has to be something exciting I can do.

Any tips for hard launching partners on social media? For context, I’ve (Indian American female) been dating my white American boyfriend for 3 years and we just got engaged after two years of convincing my parents. They are very happy and excited now, but I’m scared shitless about being ostracized / judged by my extended family and Indian community in the US once I “let the cat out of the bag” on the engagement news. I want to be proud and confident about this but could use some moral support.
