Im 24 and have been in a relationship for almost 5 years. Used to have a few friends in similarly lengthy relationships but they all just broke up in the last 3 months. Do friends breaking up sometimes mess with your head? They all said they felt like they needed to be single to discover themselves as adults. Which I totally get... but then should I be doing the same...

I dun really see the logic here.

Are you saying you want to break up with your partner because all of your friends are doing so?

Were there glitches that make you want to break up and you are trying to find a reason for that, or you simply want to do it because everyone around you is doing it?

I don’t think it’s as simple as the two options your proposed. I’m just young and haven’t grown up with examples of strong romantic relationships (all women in my family from my mom, grandma and aunts are single moms that didn’t keep in touch with the father of their children, and while this provided stellar examples of female strength and independence it didn’t show me what cohabitation and compromise and romantic love looks like on the long run) so I relied a lot on my friends to be those examples for me. Now that said friends have broken up with their SOs, I just wonder if there’s a broader point that has to do with the importance of getting to know yourself independently of a partner before entering such a long relationship, especially so young. I love my partner so much and there aren’t any glitches, all of my friends’ stories just make me wonder if they’re on to something and maybe I haven’t set up my relationship for future success (like another 10years down the line) bc I didn’t get to grow alone now. I really don’t know though! Just rambling

First let me say I married my high school sweetheart at 24 and we are still happily married in our 30s, so I am not against young people being in serious relationships. But if you are seriously considering ending a five year relationship solely because some friends have broken up with their SOs, you may not be mature enough for the seriousness of your relationship. Your relationship with yourself, and your relationship with your SO, have nothing to do with your friends’ relationships. You are an individual person with individual needs and goals. If you cannot recognize that, then yes perhaps you do need to work on that. Whether you can do that within your relationship is something only you can decide, maybe with the help of a therapist.

I’m 28 and started dating my girlfriend at 22. We lived together after 2 and we obviously have had periods were it’s been a challenge but working through that made our relationship so much better. The real question you need to ask yourself is are you in this because it’s convenient or do you really enjoy this person.

like

Sincere question - when you go through the challenging times where you probably don’t really enjoy the person all that much, what is it that gives you the strength to stick around? Is it blind optimism (that they can change or that you can change)?

Some people disappear into their relationships. Their SO becomes the main friend and the hobby and the romantic partner all rolled into one. If your friends were having relationships like that, then yeah makes sense they want to discover themselves and develop other sides of themselves.

like

That happened to me when I was 27. I was in a friend group of all long term couples. Within the same year all 4 couples split.

like

Depends. Do you feel like you can function as an adult on your own without having someone to fall back on? If yes, then youre fine and good on you for a great relationship.

If not, then might be worth developing those skills.

That’s the slutty summer FOMO kicking in for your friends. If you’re happy with your relationship, don’t give in to that. If you were doubting anyway, you might consider breaking up, since you were quite young for a serious relationship. Don’t do it because your friends did it.

Based on their reasoning, it seems like they felt their relationship was holding them back from being their true or authentic selves, or that the relationship was no longer serving them. For some, that happens — partners outgrow each other. In other relationships, partners grow together and support each other through that process, without sacrificing independence or personal growth.

It’s probably a good idea for you to reflect on your relationship and your own growth. But just because your friends needed to leave their relationships to grow, doesn’t mean you and your partner need to do the same.

This happens when people divorce too. The divorce in a close friend group can cause other people to introspect and question their own situations. You might see your relationships with your friends change as part of this too. But you have to know your own mind and whether you and your SO are in it for the long haul, especially if you’ve made it through the last year+

Do you think your relationship Is holding you back in some way?
Career, grad school, location, financial goals?

I put a lot of efforts making friends and always try to be with my friends whenever they need. But, I didn’t always get invited to the party while guys they complained a lot and they hate…those guys are often invited. Maybe attraction is a part of problem in making friendship? Because the guy I hang out have big preference with certain race and he wants to be friend with them more than me. And it seems to insult me sometimes…but let’s be positive… maybe culture, language and other? I’m sad tho.
