Oh it’s true. The Denny triangle and SLU area were all crime riddled warehouses you wouldn’t want to be near after sun down in the 90s and now they are places with high end apartments, restaurants and bars, dentists offices, etc. it’s so horrible that it’s now a place safe enough and clean enough that you see women out jogging alone at night in Denny park and they aren’t even running from someone.
I love this answer so much
While the above is true it also created spaces where the majority of Seattle can’t afford to live or enjoy. It isn’t an Amazon exclusive issue. A coalition of tech companies (Microsoft, Google, and Amazon…) are largely to blame for the housing and affordability crisis facing the city. While they bring services, food and cleanliness to the small parts of the city they occupy, and to those that can afford them, they are largely displacing people who would otherwise love to live in the area. This is especially hard given the cities infrastructure wasn’t built for the population the industry attracted. While I certainly benefit from it, living in Denny Triangle, it’s not hard to see the impact on others.
Amazon 1; as much as you would like to say it isn’t, the salaries of Amazon tech workers in the heart of Seattle has a LARGE role to play in the housing accessibility and affordability crisis in this city. I’m a Seattle native. I remember this city before Amazon. Microsoft wealth poured into Seattle for arts, culture, etc. AND without disrupting the Seattle housing market- rather, it built up new developments on otherwise pretty open land on the east side. It’s also because Microsoft is rooted in Seattle and part of the DNA of its founding. Amazon is NOT. Amazon could give fewer shits about Seattle (see: their request for proposal from cities for a second HQ, in which they cited ‘tax breaks’ 30+ times)
I grew up here. Much prefer the pre Amazon Seattle.
Well, as a fellow native, I’m sure he would agree with me. Though I’m nostalgic for 1990’s Seattle. Not 1920s Seattle. And yes Amazon has ruined Seattle,as well as small businesses across the country.
Wow. I thought they just meant traffic.
