Has anyone gone from a complex litigation practice like Construction and/or Government Contracts to a more general civil lit practice (PI, family, etc.)? I'm highly debating making the switch as I feel like these massive complex construction cases aren't really getting me enough solid litigation experience. I rarely, if ever, see the inside of a courthouse, and am generally just bored. If anyone has made the switch I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Before I was in house, I went from big law to a regional trial boutique that still had sophisticated clients but they were not F100 companies like in big law. In my experience, you’ll get more hands on opportunities but the quality of lawyering on the other side (and even at the smaller firm) will be significantly worse (sometimes comically so) and you’ll probably wonder how people haven’t been sued for malpractice or even manage to have happy clientele.

WLB was significantly worse, in part because the culture was no working from home ever.

It was a terrible year of my life but longterm it was good for my career. When I went back up big law I had much more confidence and experience than others my year, and as a result I was quickly elevated on teams and made the senior associate in charge, which definitely helped me going in house (which was my end goal).

I'm entering my final year of law school but am going part time since I work full time as a paralegal. I have been a paralegal for more 10+ years and I want to open my own firm after I pass the bar.

I've worked at a lot of different size firms including a startup with a few attorneys and I was able to help with a lot of the ground work with getting the practice management system in place and still do some of that now at my current firm. Has anyone done this right out of law school? Any advice?

I am concerned with fulfilling billable hours requirement. I’m required to hit 2100 hours yearly and I’m at ~1,500 hours and I think I’ll hit 150-180hours this month. What will happen if I don’t hit my targeted amount by the end of my year.

I have two offers, one from Am Law 100 firm and one from Am Law 200 firm. Am Law 200 firm is offering 40K more (otherwise the firms have same hours target and, based on discussions, similar culture). I’m trying to decide between the two based on long term career prospects, both offer opportunity for NEP (not sure how realistic it is at either). Also not sure of overall earning potential down the road. Is the 40K now worth it or am I likely to make that up at the Am Law 100 firm in the future?

Why would we resent someone who has that opportunity?
