My firm offers $2,500/year for professional development, but the process to get it approved is like pulling teeth. I’ve had requests for CLEs denied because they “weren’t directly relevant.” Shouldn’t we get to choose what makes us better lawyers?

They only want to pay for professional development that will benefit the firm. If you're taking courses in other areas that you don't practice, that doesn't benefit them. That's business. If you want to learn new areas, you're going to have to do it on your own dime. This is a benefit, not a right. They don't have to pay for any of it if they don't want to.

They should have a policy for it. If there are pre-req’s they need to be stated.

But if it’s just a carte blache, they need to reimburse it. Do one of those tropical island CLE trips.

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? TIA!
