They only want to pay for professional development that will benefit the firm. If you're taking courses in other areas that you don't practice, that doesn't benefit them. That's business. If you want to learn new areas, you're going to have to do it on your own dime. This is a benefit, not a right. They don't have to pay for any of it if they don't want to.

They should have a policy for it. If there are pre-req’s they need to be stated.
But if it’s just a carte blache, they need to reimburse it. Do one of those tropical island CLE trips.
