My first interview for an industry position felt very different from academic interviews. There was more focus on teamwork, timelines, and business impact than on publications alone. It caught me a bit off guard at first. What surprised you most when you first interviewed outside academia?

I think there’s an assumption that you can be trained on the job to learn all the technical pieces of the role, but soft skills can be harder to develop

Yeah, similar here. There was a lot of talk of office politics and interpersonal communication unless on the actual work. I've come to realize that's pretty normal but it took me off guard at first.

Interviewing in the corporate space meant everything just seemed more practical. A phrase you use, business impact, comes to mind. I wasn't too shocked by that, and in a way it seemed refreshing.

Yeah that’s standard
Industry doesn’t care about publications and won’t even ask for a presentation or similar
It’s definitely a shock when you’re used to doing presentations and talking about grant applications/ publications

I’m struggling. I left an agency I liked last year due to growth limitations and since then I’ve worked at 2 different agencies and can’t seem to find my footing. The first one seemed like a good fit at first but then it turned out to not be the best place for me so I left. At my current agency I feel super undervalued. I’m always raising my hand and offering to help where I can and no matter what I do, I don’t feel utilized or valued or part of the team. It’s really taken a toll on my confidence
