My friends and family are telling me to stop doing my cpa and that there are other options in accounting ( have been trying for about 1.5 year) I really just don’t think they get it and I am determined to finish it but I feel like their opinions are starting to weight. Any thoughts?

Follow your heart. If you want to be a CPA, it's going to take determination despite big obstacles. Your family's opinions are a part of your obstacles.

Since you keep failing, will you be able to take time off work outside of busy season to devote more time to studying?

like

So you’ve studied 1.5 years haven’t passed any of the four or just one ?

I know of two seniors at my previous firm who have been seniors for three years because they can’t pass the cpa exam . I absolutely think after 3 years of being a senior can’t pass the exam go try something else - industry, operations etc

I have another friend stopped working to concentrate fully on the exam. He’s been out of work for one year still hasn’t passed the exam. I can’t say I find that to be the move either

I know exactly how you’re feeling. We both work in M&A. I’m in almost 2 years now 3/4 exams done, keep struggling with this last one and about to lose credit for my first pass. It friggin sucks. It’s absolutely hell studying and working FT. I curse the AICPA every day. The gatekeeping in this profession is horrid and deserves to be torn to pieces. I rejoice in hearing of the cpa shortage, maybe one day future generations won’t be subjected to the level of gatekeeping that I predict will be broken down by regulators. It’s accounting, it’s not rocket science. Hope this at least provides you comfort in knowing there are others that share your anxiety.

The 30 month extension helps but I know what you mean. Depends, if you have good savings and you have a family/friends to lean back on then I would say take 3-5 months off and solely focus on passing it. This work and pass culture is not for everyone and you shouldn’t think that your anything less by taking time off to finish it.
